The acting head of US Homeland Security, Kevin McAleenan, has resigned after six months in the post. In a tweet, President Donald Trump said Mr McAleenan wanted to spend more time with his family. He said his replacement would be named next week. Mr McAleenan, 48, is the fourth person to serve as the head of Homeland Security during Mr Trump’s tenure. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sent his “warm” congratulations to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, for being named the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner. Mr Ahmed, who became Prime Minister in 2018, signed a landmark peace deal with Eritrea ending a 20-year-old conflict. The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. He was awarded the prize for his efforts to “achieve peace and international cooperation”. Ethiopia reached a peace deal with Eritrea last year, ending a 20-year military stalemate following their 1998-2000 border war. He was named as the winner of the 100th Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. The prize, worth nine million Swedish crowns (about £730,000; $900,000), will be awarded in Oslo in December. The Director General at the Mental Health Authority, Dr Kwasi Osei, has revealed that victims of suicide in Ghana are mostly the youth and children. At a press conference as part of the Mental Health Week Celebration under the theme ‘Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention’, Dr Osei noted that the World Health Organisation has put figures of people who die by suicide each year at more than 800,000, making it the principal cause of death among people 15 to 29 years old. For the first time a woman has been chosen as the chief justice in Sudan. The Sovereign Council, which is made up of civilian and military officials, confirmed that Supreme Court judge Neemat Abdulllah would head the country’s judiciary. The former Managing Director of defunct Capital Bank Ghana Limited, William Ato Essien, has been dragged to an Accra High Court over several offences including stealing and money laundering. Together with three others, Mr Essien, who became the highest shareholder after leaving the Bank, was charged on Tuesday, October 8.
