There is little evidence screen use for children is harmful in itself, guidance from leading paediatricians says. Parents should worry less as long as they have gone through a checklist on the effect of screen time on their child, it says. While the guidance avoids setting screen time limits, it recommends not using them in the hour before bedtime. Experts say it is important that the use of devices does not replace sleep, exercising and time with family. It was informed by a review of evidence published at the same time in the BMJ Open medical journal, and follows a…
The Asokowa Divisional Police Command has commenced investigation into the death of a woman at Atasemanso in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region. The woman, believed to be in her mid-30s, is alleged to have drowned in a water well Thursday evening. Residents in the area were in a state of shock, following the mysterious death of the woman. The lifeless body of the woman was found in the well when they went to fetch water Friday morning. “We are confused how the deceased landed in the well water since it is covered. We don’t know whether she forced herself in the…
A US judge has rejected Ed Sheeran’s call for a legal case accusing him of copying parts of Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On to be dropped. In his decision released on Thursday, District Judge Louis Stanton said a jury should decide. He said he found “substantial similarities between several of the two works’ musical elements”. Sheeran denies ripping off sections of the 1973 classic for his number one hit Thinking Out Loud. The action has been brought against Sheeran, Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Atlantic Records by the estate and heirs of the late producer Ed Townsend, who co-wrote Let’s…
Apple has been ordered to remove some iPhone models from its stores in Germany over a patent dispute with chip giant Qualcomm. A court ruling in Munich on 20 December found Apple had infringed patents on power-saving technology. On Thursday Qualcomm paid a €1.3bn (£1.2bn) bond, allowing the ban on iPhone 7 and 8 models to go ahead. The bond will fund damages awarded to Apple if the iPhone maker wins its appeal against the injunction. The German case is Qualcomm’s third attempt at blocking the sale of iPhones. The California-based chip maker has made patent infringement claims against Apple…
The Resident Pastor for Glorious Word Power Church, Rev Ronnie Kofi Nyarko, has implored the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) to pray to God to avert any calamity that he revealed to his senior pastor, Rev Owusu Bempa, instead of praying against him. Rev Nyarko said God does not reveal prophecies for the nation to fight over them but to pray over them. The resident pastor made the call while reacting to a statement from the GPCC that it had declared fasting and prayer against Rev Owusu Bempa over his prophecies on December 31. The GPCC criticized the publicity…
The Deputy Minority Chief Whip of Parliament, Ahmed Ibrahim, has chastised the government for what he says is rushing to declare January 7 a public holiday when the House is yet to consider an amendment to the Public Holidays Act. Government on Thursday, December 13, 2018 laid a new bill before Parliament, seeking an amendment to Act 601 by, among others, including January 7 and August 4 as public holidays. Gov’t proposes Jan 7 and…
Manchester City reignited the Premier League title race as they ended Liverpool’s 20-game unbeaten start to the season to reduce their lead at the top of the table to four points. Pep Guardiola’s hosts knew nothing less than a win at Etihad Stadium would do on a Thursday night riddled with tension that produced a game that was frenetic if not a classic. Leroy Sane produced the decisive moment 18 minutes from time as he collected Raheem Sterling’s pass to fire across Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, after it had seemed like Roberto Firmino’s stooping header would maintain the visitors’ unbeaten sequence.…
The Democrat-controlled US House of Representatives has voted to end a partial government shutdown – but the move looks certain to be vetoed by President Donald Trump. Mr Trump has said he will reject any measure that does not provide funding for his proposed US-Mexico border wall. New House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has branded the wall “an immorality”. The measures also require the approval of the Republican-run Senate – but senators have already ruled this out. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans there would not back measures that Mr Trump did not support and called the Democrats’ move a…
Black Stars striker David Accam has tied the knot with Black Queens striker Florence Dadson. The couple ply their trade in the United States of America, where the love between them was brewed. They are said to have dated for barely a year. While Accam plays for Philadelphia Union in the Major League Soccer, Dadson plies her trade for Gulf Coast Texans in the W-League. Accam had not played for Ghana’s junior sides before gaining a call-up into the Black Stars in 2013. Dadson was, however, a dominant player for Ghana’s U-17 female side, the Black Maidens, in 2008 and…
Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko would have to battle past Cameroonian giants Coton Sport of Garoua for a place in the group phase of the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup. The two African giants were drawn to slug it out in the play-offs at a ceremony held in Egypt on Friday. Kotoko were one of the 15 clubs who progressed from the first round of qualifiers in the continent’s second-tier club competition. The Porcupine Warriors saw off Kenya’s Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 on aggregate to get to this stage. The Cameroonians, on the other hand, had failed to make it to the group…
