Fire has gutted an electoral commission building in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the violent run-up to a presidential vote. The cause of the fire, which broke out overnight, has not been confirmed, and the scale of the damage is unclear. Black smoke could still be seen over the site, a warehouse building, on Thursday morning. The campaign to elect a successor to President Joseph Kabila on 23 December has been marred by deadly clashes. The president’s mandate ended in 2016, but elections have been repeatedly delayed. Nigeria’s main opposition presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has signed an accord aimed at ensuring that next year’s elections in the troubled nation proceed peacefully. Mr Abubakar had failed to join his main rival, President Muhammadu Buhari, in signing the accord on Tuesday, with his aides saying he had not been officially invited to the ceremony. Since its establishment in 1958, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) has contributed in training over 2000 Ghanaian professionals in the fields of education, agriculture, health, and women empowerment. The peace pledge was signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
