Russia’s Supreme Court on Thursday issued a ruling banning Jehovah’s Witnesses after the justice ministry called on it to dissolve the “extremist organisation”. The Chairman of the Spare Part Dealers Association at Abossey-Okai in Accra, Samuel Siaw Ampadu, says government officials “who wear suits and coats think because we are ‘dirty’ we do not know our rights”. He says due to this they are careful when dealing with “the technocrats” and that does not mean spare parts dealers, because their work involves dirt, do not know what to do in terms of their business. The Ministry of Finance has responded to recent allegations by the Minority in Parliament that the April 3 bond issued by government was skewed in the favour of cronies and relatives of the Minister of Finance. At a press conference addressed on Tuesday, April 18 by former Deputy Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority said the bond was issued in secrecy with Franklin Templeton Investment Limited’s Trevor G Trefgarne getting 95 per cent of the total. The Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Emmanuel Kofi Nti, has written to all banks operating in Ghana to discontinue forthwith the charging of taxes on financial services. This follows the passing of the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Act by Parliament. The amendments were proposed as part of the 2017 budget statement and economic policy delivered by Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Ken Ofori-Atta in Parliament on March 2.
