On Thursday, September 14, 2017, Kumawood film producers, actors and actresses hit the streets of Kumasi to demonstrate against the influx of foreign telenovelas on our television screens. The demonstrators subsequently presented a petition to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to add his voice to the fight for more local content to be shown. This, I must say, is a good cause. But, the question is: will the demonstration have any impact on the local industry? Why did they choose to petition the Otumfuo instead of the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture? We were all in this country…

The tournament will come to an end this Sunday, and the league will resume with the 27th week fixtures. The match of the week will be the potentially title decider between Aduana Stars and WAFA in Dormaa Ahenkro. Aduana lead WAFA on top of the table by just a point, and the…
Fears of the motoring public as regards reports of increase in transport fares have been allayed after an announcement by Road Transport Operators that there will be no upward review of fares. After a marginal increase in fuel prices for the second price window in September, drivers agitated for an increase in fares. But after a meeting held on Friday, stakeholders in the transport sector agreed that there should be no increase in fares from the fuel price increases. “We as transport operators have monitored the increases and decreases in the prices of fuel from April, 2017 when we had…

The board of directors, management and workers of the New Times Corporation have agreed to amicably resolve the grievances that led to the locking out of Managing Director Carol Annang on Monday. At a meeting on Friday between the board and management, on one hand, and the workers, represented by the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), on the other hand, the parties called for the immediate return of normalcy to the state media firm. On Monday, workers demonstrated against management by calling for the head of Ms Annang. They locked their offices as they also protested their working conditions,…
The Metropolitan Chief Executive for Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi, is rallying the support of assembly and unit committee members to embark on an exercise to pull down emerging slums in the metropolis to save lives. The Kumasi Mayor has observed slums are fast springing up in almost every sub-metro, particularly erection of accommodation and trading structures on wetlands around the city. “This should not be allowed since such areas experience severe flooding during the rainy season and might result in deaths,” said the Mayor as he addressed the 3rd Ordinary Meeting of 2nd Session of the 7th Assembly meeting in Kumasi. Recent rains…
Greater Accra Region Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Joseph Cobbina Ade Coker says he is not unaware that some leading members of the party wanted to mount last Thursday’s platform to “campaign”. But he had to stop them since “nobody has told me they are campaigning”. Followers of leading NDC member Professor Joshua Alabi, who is said to be interested in running for the party’s presidential primary, were angry on Thursday for the refusal of organizers to allow their idol to speak. Organisers allowed some key personalities including National Chairman Kofi Portuphy to talk to the supporters. But…

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has begun efforts to get a database of all its members. According to the party, it is doing away with the biometric register used for the election of their 2016 flagbearer. “We have decided as a party to scrap that [biometric] one,” said Greater Accra Region Chairman Joseph Ade Coker on TV3’s News @10 on Thursday. He said the imperfections with the expanded register contributed to the ignominious loss of the party in the 2016 elections. Mr Ade Coker pointed out that all efforts exerted to clean it up proved futile. The football administrator-turned-politician…
