India has inaugurated a 9.15km (5.68-mile) bridge over the Lohit river, easily its longest ever, which connects the disputed state of Arunachal Pradesh with the north-eastern state of Assam. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as its own, and refers to it as “southern Tibet”. Beijing recently strongly objected to India’s decision to allow Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama to visit the state and has also protested against the development of military infrastructure there. But India has defended its right to do so. “With China getting more and more aggressive, it is time we strengthened our physical infrastructure to defend our territory,”…
The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says Ghanaians are looking up to the Ghana Armed Forces to be at the forefront in the fight against illegal mining, otherwise referred to as ‘galamsey’. According to President Akufo-Addo, as his government intensifies its efforts to curb ‘galamsey’, which is polluting the country’s waters, destroying farmlands and forests, and threatening the very survival of the country, “Ghanaians would continue to rely on the efforts of our security services, with the Armed Forces in the forefront, to help deal with the problem.” The President was confident that “as always, the Armed…
The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has listed illegal mining and the erratic gas supply from Nigeria as a major dampener on its ability to transmit power efficiently to consumers. The national power production company maintains that it can no longer rely on the supply of natural gas from Nigeria through the West African Gas Pipeline as a major source for transmission of electric power. Speaking to a group of senior media personnel at GRIDCo Plant in Tema, Ing William Amuna, the Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, said, “Currently we do not look forward to gas from Nigeria as a constant…

Cristiano Ronaldo is facing possible charges of tax fraud in Spain. Prosecutors have passed a file to the country’s tax office, which will decide whether to press charges against the Portuguese Real Madrid striker. Reports in Spain say Ronaldo, 32, is suspected of defrauding 15m euros (£13m) between 2011 and 2014. In December, leaked documents suggested Ronaldo had avoided tax on income from image rights allegedly held in offshore accounts. He denied the claims. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was also implicated in those claims – published after an international consortium of journalists obtained a trove of about 18 million…
