Barclays says its profits more than doubled in the first three months of the year, boosted by better performance across the board. Pre-tax profit for the first quarter was £1.682bn, up from £793m for the same period last year. Small scale miners in the Ashanti Region have expressed readiness to assist the government in fighting the menace of illegal mining, popularly referred to as galamsey. The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners intends to constitute a taskforce with the mandate to monitor and report activities of illegal miners to security personnel.
