The Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has dismissed claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that its flagship ‘One-Village, One-Dam’ (1V1D) programme is deceptive. In a statement last Sunday, the NDC described as substandard some dams being constructed in some selected villages in the northern part of Ghana in fulfillment of the government’s 1V1D promise.  The NDC also called to question the specifications of the dams, describing them as “dugouts” and not “dams”. The government has described as false claims by the Minority in Parliament that the Akufo-Addo government has, within two years, borrowed GH¢80 billion. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has said she will not scrap a controversial plan to allow extradition to mainland China, despite mass protests. On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people rallied against the bill which critics fear allows China to target political opponents in the region. Speaking to reporters on Monday, she insisted the law was necessary and said human rights safeguards were in place. Chinese state media said “foreign forces” were behind the protests. There was a drama amidst uncontrollable laughter at Fijai, a suburb of Sekondi/Takoradi when a suspected thief who was arrested in the community told those who arrested him that he had forgotten his real name.
