The Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Appeatu, has appealed to political parties in the country to disband vigilante groups. He indicated that activities of these vigilante groups pose serious threats to Ghana’s democracy. Minister for National Security Albert Kan-Dapaah says police personnel present during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election were rather armed, and that no operative deployed from the National Security had arms. The Minister disclosed this on Thursday, February 14, when he took his turn before the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating the violence during the January 31 by-election. The Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery has denied that the vehicles used by some masked armed men during the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency by-election belonged to the Ghana Police Service. Personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service who were deployed to the Nkoranza to avert possible violence are expected to be on the grounds for as long as the security is not convinced of an incident-free event. Donald Trump’s former election campaign chief Paul Manafort breached his plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller by lying to prosecutors, a US judge says. US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled that Manafort “made multiple false statements” to the FBI, Mr Mueller’s office and a grand jury. A three-member committee has been inaugurated to investigate the October 22 disturbances at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Parliament has approved a motion which will delay the implementation of the Right to Information Bill (RTI) till January 2020 when it is passed.
