Graduate teachers across the country say they are not civil servants and will therefore not close from school at 4:30pm. According to the National Graduate Teachers Association (NAGRAT), its employer, the Ghana Education Service, has employed subtle ways to “unilaterally extend the instructional hours of teachers”. The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has warned it will from March 30 not tolerate further excuses by the government in the payment of arrears in salaries and allowances of its members across the country. The teachers say government owes teachers to the tune of over 50 million cedis in vehicle maintenance allowances, transfer grants, transport and travel allowances. Hundreds of irrigation farmers in the Bawku West District of the Upper East region say thay have lost millions of cedis to poor harvest occasioned by no availability of water to feed their crops.
