The annual West Africa Regional Energy Summit is set to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from January 24-25, 2018. The Regional Summit provides a platform where public and private stakeholders and industry experts can stay up-to-date with upcoming projects in the pipeline and new strategies to unlock gas and power trading in West Africa. This year’s summit will receive participation from West Africa Gas Pipeline Authority, Ghana’s Energy Ministry, Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF) among other participants from across Africa. The Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu says the police service would adopt more proactive steps and pragmatic approaches to ensure the safety of lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people in Ghana. This assurance was contained in a letter by the police service in response to the Human Rights Watch’s report on the violations of the rights of LGBT people in Ghana. The Ministry of Energy has denied claims by minority in Parliament that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is planning to increase electricity tariffs without proper procedure. The minority spokesperson on energy, Adam Mutawakilu, who made the allegation on behalf of his side, also accused the government of sidestepping the laws of the country and meddling in the affairs of the PURC. Rescue workers in southern California are searching for survivors after mudslides and flooding in which at least 13 people have died. More than 30 miles (48km) of the main coastal road have been closed and police said the scene “looked like a World War One battlefield”. A group of 300 people are reportedly trapped in Romero Canyon neighbourhood east of Santa Barbara, with rescue efforts due to resume at daybreak. The death toll is expected to rise. The Asante Akim North District Security Council has resolved to forcibly evict all cattle in the area in an attempt to enforce a high court ruling which ordered the evacuation of the animals. After an emergency DISEC meeting on Tuesday January 9, the DCE for the area Francis Oti-Boateng hinted of their resolution to shoot every cattle on site if the herdsmen do not comply with the evacuation directives. The Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism is considering legal action against the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for disqualifying persons with albinism who turned up in the just ended enlistment exercise. The Association says such a move by the GIS constitutes discrimination against persons with albinism which must be discouraged. The Ghana Immigration Service sold 84,000 service forms to prospective applicants but only 500 would be enlisted. Applicants with tattoos, albinism, and other forms of physical body deformities were disqualified.
