Health authorities in the Ashanti Region say swine flu vaccines to be administered to students of Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) where an outbreak of the disease has so far claimed four lives are not yet available in the country. A total of 85 students of the Kumasi Academy were affected with the H1N1 influenza Type A virus, popularly known as swine flu virus since November 30, 2017. One student of the Damongo Senior High School in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region has been confirmed dead. The student whose name is yet to be revealed, according to the District Chief Executive, Saeed Muhazu, died at about 1:00pm Tuesday while on admission at the Damongo Hospital. Nine other students are currently on admission, the chief executive told 3News. Female students of senior high schools within the Assin area in the Central Region have made damning allegations against their male teachers, claiming they are being sexually harassed by their teachers in exchange for grades and money. According to the students, the teachers mostly coerce them into having sexual relationship with them in exchange for favours such as good grades in their end of term exams and money. Eleven students of Kumasi Academy SHS are still on admission at four hospitals in the Ashanti region after being diagnosed with the Influenza type A pandemic strain (swine flu), the regional health directorate has said. The Regional Health Director, Dr Emmanuel Kojo Tenkorang, updating the media about the outbreak on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, said three are on admission at the KNUST Hospital, one at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, five at the Kumasi South Hospital and two at the Manhyia Government Hospital. Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL), a subsidiary company of the Jospong Group has paid the tuition fees of 10 university students from James Town in Accra. The gesture was part of the Company’s community outreach programme under its Corporate Social Responsibility.
