The Forestry Commission (FC) is to employ 400 people to serve as forest guards to protect the country’s forest reserves from illegal chainsaw operations. Chief Executive of the Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, who announced this, said the Finance Ministry has given them financial clearance for the recruitment of the people. A man suspected of having a sexual relationship with a married woman has had his penis and scrotum cut off by some unknown assailants in a case the Police at Amasaman are treating as attempted murder. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has said there are many smuggled vehicles plying the streets in Ghana, stressing that the owners circumvented the process and evaded the payment of import duties on the vehicles. At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, the GRA revealed that it has recently impounded over 100 vehicles which were plying the streets and the owners did not pay import duties. The vehicles were impounded through intelligence gathering and through the special task force set up by the Minister of Finance. The Food and Drugs Authority has begun investigations to establish how at least four 20-footer containers of rotten mackerel were imported into the country, cleared and some leased onto the market. One Kofi Dokyi, who imported the ‘Asahi’ branded mackerel into the country has been given a police bail together with four drivers of the container truck which carried the goods to a warehouse at Ofankor in Accra.
