Only three banks out of the 34 banks currently operating in the country are in a position to meet the new GH¢400 million minimum capital requirement set by the Central Bank of Ghana (BoG) without recourse to additional capital, credit consultant, Emmanuel Akrong has said. The list has only GCB Bank, which recently absorbed indigenous banks Capital and UT banks, as the only local bank. At least 18 policemen have been killed in an attack on a convoy in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula claimed by so-called Islamic State, security sources say. Militants detonated a roadside bomb near the town of el-Arish, reportedly destroying three armoured vehicles and a fourth with signal-jamming equipment. They then opened fire with machine guns at survivors of the blast. The interior ministry confirmed there had been an attack and that several policemen had been killed or injured. Independent evaluations commissioned by Newmont examining the methodology and conclusions of WACAM-sponsored reports on the Ahafo mine were publicly released on Thursday. The WACAM-sponsored reports, released in February, alleged that the Ahafo mine adversely impacted water sources and marginalized women in nearby communities. “The independent evaluations found that the methodology used in the WACAM-sponsored reports were inconsistent with accepted methodology and cannot  be relied upon as the basis for the reports’ conclusions,” Newmont said in a statement. Passengers who patronize the pontoon at Dambai in the Krachi East District of the Volta Region were stranded on Monday due to the rising water level. Passengers, who are mostly traders with fish, yam, meat, eggs, and other food stuffs fear their commodities would rot if they are not able to convey them to the market.
