President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has handed over two more petitions against two commissioners at the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, for action. This is in accordance with Article 146(3) of the 1992 Constitution. The petitions against Georgina Opoku-Amankwaah and Dr Amadu Sulley were filed by Emmanuel Korsi Senyo, a “Concerned Citizen of Ghana”, on Tuesday. The fate of two former Guantanamo Bay detainees (GITMO-2), whether or not to send them away, has squarely been placed at the doorstep of Parliament after government sent agreement to the house for ratification. The General Legal Council (GLC) has slapped a four-year suspension on lawyer Kwasi Afrifa for professional infractions. Announcing the punitive action on Friday, the Council said the Kumasi-based lawyer was formally charged with two counts under Rule 5(10) of the Legal Profession Rules of 1969. But he was convicted on three counts. In the first count, lawyer Afrifa is accused of bringing legal action against one Dr Emelia Timpo on behalf of her brother Nana Kwamina Apreh Ackah, in a case he had interest in as a lawyer. The management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced the closure of the presidential bypass of the Kotoka International Airport to traffic. The bypass will be closed beginning Tuesday, August 1. This, according to management, is necessary to “enable the contractor on the Terminal 3 Project commence work on the construction of a road network and car park”. Sod was cut for the project in 2016 by Former President John Dramani Mahama. It is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018.
