Staff of Pantang Psychiatric Hospital on Wednesday marched from the medical facility to Adenta-Barrier, and back, to register their displeasure at the mass encroachment on their lands. This is the second in a series of industrial actions by staff to get government to stop the encroachment in front of the hospital. On Monday, staff embarked on a sit-down as the first of many industrial actions to get their grievances resolved. A 35-year-old police officer, Corporal Ebenezer Okyere, has shot himself dead at Tafo, a suburb of Kumasi. The unfortunate incident occurred around 7:30 Wednesday morning. A girlfriend of the late Corporal Okyere said the officer decided to take his own life shortly after receiving a phone call. The girlfriend, who is currently in police custody, claimed she tried to persuade Corporal Okyere to reverse his decision but he threatened to shoot her if she doesn’t move out of the room. The National Development Planning Commission is advocating a national budget allocation for contraceptives. Ghana’s population has increased by 9.1 million from the 2006 census of 18.9 million to 24 million in the last census conducted in 2010. The alarming rise in population has been attributed to low patronage of contraceptives, especially among women. It is reported that less than a quarter of women use contraceptives because one out of every three women meet their needs in family planning. A child oriented nongovernmental organisation, Juvenile Reform Foundation-Ghana (JRF-Ghana) has launched a charity concert to raise funds in support of released and incarcerated juvenile offenders in the country’s correctional centres. Dubbed ‘Our Future,’ the concert will take place at the last quarter of the year. It will be held three times every year in three different regions. Government has given approval to the Ghana Prison Service to recruit 1,000 prison officers to enhance its performance so as to meet the international best practices in prison administration. Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia made the disclosure in Accra on Tuesday at the inauguration of a 13-member Governing Council of the Ghana Prisons Council. Mr Trump has been party to an eye-watering 4,000 lawsuits over the last 30 years, US media say. And now the mogul turned commander-in-chief has attracted one more, after seven people sued him for blocking them on Twitter.
