France is set to ban the sale of any car that uses petrol or diesel fuel by 2040, in what the ecology minister called a “revolution”. Nicolas Hulot announced the planned ban on fossil fuel vehicles as part of a renewed commitment to the Paris climate deal. He said France planned to become carbon neutral by 2050. One of the Commissioners of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), Georgina Opoku Amankwa, has proceeded on leave following a recommendation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). EOCO is reported to be investigating the loss of about GH¢480,000 from the Endowment Fund at the Commission. Two other senior officers including the Chief Accountant, Kwaku Owusu Agyei-Larbi, has also been asked to proceed on leave over the same issue. The Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has disclosed that government is preparing to meet the board of the International Monetary Fund later this month. A team from the IMF led by Joël Toujas-Bernaté, earlier visited Accra on the 10th of February this year to welcome the government’s intention to conduct a full audit of outstanding obligations under the External Credit Facility (ECF). Ghana entered into the ECF facility with the Fund for a total of 918 million over a three year period in 2015. The fund in January 2016 approved a third disbursement of $114.6 million for Ghana. The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is asking the Akufo-Addo-led government to stop the ongoing “dismissal and selective transfers” of workers on political grounds. Expressing “grave concern” about the political vigilantism and the violent takeover of public organizations by alleged party foot soldiers of the New Patriotic Party, the unionised body challenged the president to unite all Ghanaians for economic and social development. An Accra High Court has discharged 13 more suspects in the murder trial of Major Maxwell Mahama by residents of Dekyira Obuasi in the Central region in May this year. This follows an earlier discharge of some 32 others earlier in June after investigations found no credible evidence against them. The police said some of the discharged 13 would be used as witnesses in the trial. Meanwhile 13 other suspects are on the run and wanted by the police in connection to the murder. It is now emerging that the boy who told police he was 12 years old when he was arrested in connection with the murder of a senior military officer in May had drastically reduced his age. The suspect, Ebenezer Asamoah, is in fact 22 years old, a document produced in court by police investigators revealed.
