Widow of Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, has been declared winner of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Lydia Seyram Alhassan polled 12,041 out of the total valid votes cast on Thursday to emerge winner.

She beat the consistent candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Delali Kwasi Brempong, to win the polls.

Mr Brempong’s party had, however, withdrawn from the polls due to disruptions at his home, triggered y a siege by some armed men said to be operatives of the National Security Council.

Despite the decision by the National Chairman of NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, to withdraw his candidate from the by-election, DKB, as he is affectionately called, polled 5,341 to come second.

Progressive People’s Party’s William Kofi Doworkpor, another consistent challenger from his days as a Convention People’s Party (CPP) national executive, polled 102 votes, representing 0.58 per cent to come third.

Liberal Party of Ghana’s Clement Boadi polled 17 votes to come fourth.

The by-election was occasioned by the death of Mr Agyarko in the United States of America.

The sad incident happened on November 21, 2018.

He was buried last Thursday in his hometown of Odumase-Krobo in the Eastern Region.

Birthday gift

The results of Thursday’s by-election put the total valid votes cast at 17,589 out of a total of 88,710 registered voters.

Turnout, therefore, was 19.83 per cent.

There were 88 rejected ballots.

Ms Alhassan expressed gratitude to constituents for voting her to represent them in Parliament.

She said the victory was a good birthday gift to her but she dedicates it to her late husband.
