The three companies in Ghana’s electricity transmission and distribution say they have put in place adequate measures to ensure “reliable power supply” in the Christmas and New Year festivities.
A joint statement issued by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company said they recognise their role is critical to the sustenance of the country’s socioeconomic development.
Some parts of the country, particularly some areas within the Greater Accra region have in the last week been experiencing unannounced power outages causing some people to questions as to what was happening.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on Monday December 16 began a series of power cuts to most parts of Accra and surrounding towns to enable its engineers “undertake emergency maintenance work”.
Accordingly, residents in the affected areas were without light for seven hours each day from December 16 to December 20 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The said maintenance, the ECG explained, sought to “improve service delivery,” but many people took to social media to suggest the country was gradually experiencing what has come to be known as ‘dumsor’.
Quick response to emergencies assured
But the statement by the three companies assured there will not be ‘dumsor’ during the festive season as their engineers will be on standby to attend to emergencies that may arise.
“We have therefore put in place a comprehensive business continuity plan and programme to ensure our engineers are on call to attend to emergencies when they occur across the country,” the statement issued on the eve of Christmas said.
According to them, they take their mandate to their customers and stakeholders “seriously” hence have resolved to execute same “to the best of our ability”.
It has meanwhile wished the public “a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year”.
