The timely intervention of military and police personnel has averted what would have been a chaotic situation at Ahwiam DA Primary School in the Ningo Prampram Constituency as delegates vote in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.
The primaries, which are being held in constituencies whose seats are currently occupied by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), will see the NPP elect candidates to wrestle power from the opposition in 2020.
Our reporter on the ground, Joseph Armstrong, reported on Saturday, September 28 that one of the two aspirants, Rita Akweley, was prevented by some delegates from casting her vote, alleging she had resigned her position as party executive, and thus not qualify to vote.
Armstrong said supporters of the aspirant, however, insisted their candidate was qualified to vote regardless of her resignation, a situation which nearly degenerated into confusion.
Military men, whom our reporter said had been manning the polling center since the opening of polls at 10:00am, were able to contain the situation until the arrival of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hlordzi Dodzi from the Prampram Divisional Command.
Our reporter also reports that the atmosphere is one of apprehension following allegations that the District Chief Executive (DCE) is scheming with Rita to rig the elections in her favour.
However, the constituency chairman of the party, Michael Tetteh Eku, said it is wrong for delegates to question the eligibility of candidates since all candidates have gone through all procedures laid by the party to contest the election.
He advised delegates to conduct themselves well for a peaceful election.
Order has since been restored.
