Police are essentially responsible for security at all elections in Ghana

The Ashanti Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has given the strongest indication yet that no motorbikes must ride near voting centres during Saturday’s presidential primary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This follows a meeting with the largest opposition party earlier on Wednesday.

According to the police, motorbikes either registered or unregistered will be impounded and the riders arrested if found close to the voting centres.

NDC is choosing a flagbearer out of six persons to lead them into the 2020 general elections.

The elections will be held at centres to be spread across the country.

Last Monday, a meeting of the national executives at the party’s Ashanti Region office ended in bloodshed as some unidentified men on motorbikes fired gunshots.

One person was killed.

The Ashanti Regional Command says the measures have been taken to ensure “incident-free elections, devoid of violence and act of lawlessness”.

Aside the decision on the motorbikes, busing of party taskforce members to polling stations will also not be entertained.

“All persons who have nothing to do at the centres and are only there to observe proceedings should stay 50 metres radius away from the centres,” a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, said.

It said a taskforce has been formed to visit voting centres during the elections “and arrest all motorbike riders that will be found loitering around votng centres”.
