Independent Parliamentary candidate of Agona West, Cynthia Mamle Morrison is likely to face jail term after she was cited for contempt of court before the Swedru High Court.

The MP’s qualification in the upcoming Parliamentary elections has been challenged in court.

The plaintiff who is a voter in Agona West, Emmanuel Addison, claims the MP does not meet the residency requirement in Article 94(1) of the 1992 Constitution, hence his decision to sue at the Swedru District Court.

While a Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction against Cynthia Morrison is still pending before the District Court, the MP has been captured on videos campaigning.

Lawyer for the Plaintiff, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers asserts Cynthia Morrison has shown gross disrespect to the District Court and administration of justice through her actions and has therefore cited her for contempt before the Swedru High Court.

Per the processes Mr Brako-Powers has filed in court, he is asking Cynthia Morrison to be handed a jail term to serve as deterrent to her, her followers and others.

The court will hear the contempt application on December 5, 2024, less than two days to the Parliamentary Election.

Analysts suggest if she is convicted, Cynthia Morrison will not be eligible to stand as a member of Parliament and the Electoral Commission would have to disqualify her.
