The National Identification Authority (NIA) will resume the registration of eligible applicants in the Eastern Region from Thursday, June 18.
The exercise in the Region was suspended under controversial circumstances which even went to the High Court.
The Authority had continued registering applicants in the Eastern Region despite President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s ban on social gathering on March 15.
Many civil society organisations including the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) called for an end to the exercise as Covid-19 had been recorded in the country and showed signs of spreading especially in crowded locations.
Though the High Court dismissed the injunction brought before it, the NIA decided to suspend the exercise on Saturday, March 21.
Though the ban has not been lifted, President Akufo-Addo on Sunday, May 31 relaxed it and allowed for a gathering of not more than 100 people in special situations.
The NIA o Monday, June 15 announced that the exercise will resume for nine days in the Region.
Meanwhile, the Authority has announced that from Thursday, June 18, it will begin a mop-up exercise in the Upper East and Upper West regions.
The mop-up exercise is expected to be held in all the 16 regions except the Eastern Region.
From the Upper East and Upper West regions, officials will move to the Northern, Savannah and North-East regions July 10–24.
From there, the exercise will move to the Central, Western and Western North regions July 4-23.
The Volta, Oti and Ashanti regions will have their mop-up exercise from July 30 to August 9.
While the Greater Accra Region will have its from August 16 to August 29, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions will have theirs from August 20 to September 4.
“It is expected that a total of 16.7million Ghanaians would have been registered and issued with Ghana Cards when the mop-up exercise is completed.”
The distribution of cards, which began on Wednesday, June 10, is expected to end on Thursday.
