Political activity is intensifying in Ayawaso East as five aspirants have formally filed nominations to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary scheduled for February 7.
The aspirants, Hajia Amina Adam, Baba Jamal, Dr. Yakubu Azindow, Mohammed Ramme, and Najib Mohammed Saani, submitted their forms at the NDC Greater Accra regional office amid cheers from party supporters. The filing follows the withdrawal of Abdul Salam Daaru, who was among six individuals initially to pick nomination forms. Daaru declared his support for Hajia Adam, stating that the decision was strategic: “We will not advance our contest into the primaries, not because we want to retreat, but to respect the system and support Hajia Amina Adam.”
Baba Jamal, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, emphasised his commitment to his constituents, saying, “There is a greater tax on me to serve my people. I believe my presence here will be more useful than my diplomatic service in Nigeria.”
The NDC regional office confirmed that Hajia Adam has requested to be vetted virtually, a request the party’s vetting committee is reviewing. Officials noted that the decision on virtual vetting will be finalised ahead of the exercise scheduled for Tuesday.
The aspirants remain optimistic about their chances, citing experience and preparedness as key strengths. “I believe the people will grant me their mandate. I know my constituency well, and I will put in my best effort,” one candidate said.
Observers note that the filing of nominations marks a crucial stage in the Ayawaso East primary, setting the stage for a competitive and closely watched contest.
