In a momentous event at the Jubilee House, President John Dramani Mahama officially swore in the newly appointed members of the Armed Forces Council, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to a disciplined, professional, and well-equipped armed force.

This distinguished council, established under Article 211 of the 1992 Constitution, will play a pivotal role in providing strategic leadership and oversight for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The council will be chaired by Vice President Naana Opoku-Agyemang, with other esteemed members including Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defense, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, Minister of Interior, Daniel Addo, Fuseini Iddrisu, and Nancy Dakwa Ampofo.

In his address, President Mahama emphasized the paramount role the Ghana Armed Forces play in national security, peacekeeping missions, and regional stability.

He lauded their professionalism, discipline, and international recognition, noting that their dedication to peacekeeping efforts has elevated Ghana’s reputation on the global stage.

“Our armed forces are not just a vital institution within our national security framework; they are the guardians of our sovereignty, the protectors of our democracy, and a source of immense pride for the people of Ghana.

“From ensuring peace in our communities to responding to security threats across the sub-region, you continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment and sacrifice. Your service underlines the highest ideals of patriotism, duty, and honour, and for this, you have the full appreciation of the government and people of Ghana.”

Mahama reaffirmed the government’s full appreciation of the military’s service and sacrifice, noting their contributions to humanitarian efforts, national emergency responses, and regional security operations.

Mandate and Responsibilities of the Council:

The Armed Forces Council has been tasked with providing strategic leadership, ensuring governance within the military, and upholding professionalism and accountability.

According to President Mahama, the council’s work will shape the future of Ghana’s military, and members must execute their duties with wisdom, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to national service.

“The strength of our armed forces depends not only on the bravery of our men and women in uniform but also on the leadership, policies, and decisions that guide them.”

With modern security threats rapidly evolving—ranging from terrorism and cybercrime to political instability and climate-related security challenges—President Mahama stressed that the military must remain adaptable and well-prepared.

He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the modernization of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Key Areas of Military Modernization:

The President outlined the government’s priorities to strengthen the Ghana Armed Forces, which include capacity building program. Here, the President affirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in programs to enhance the expertise and readiness of military personnel to handle both conventional and unconventional threats.

He also noted that his administration would acquire modern military equipment and technology to improve national defence capabilities.

On infrastructure development, President Mahama vowed to improve barracks, training facilities, and logistical support systems to boost operational efficiency.

Recognizing the significance of the military welfare, President Mahama indicated that his administration would ensuring military personnel and their families receive adequate healthcare, better conditions of service, and career advancement opportunities.

In his speech, President Mahama highlighted the growing role of technology in warfare, emphasizing the need to integrate data-driven security solutions, intelligence gathering, and drone technology into Ghana’s defence strategy.

Regional and International Security Cooperation:

President Mahama emphasized the Armed Forces Council’s responsibility to deepen Ghana’s security engagements with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and international allies, whiles stressing that Ghana has long been a champion of peace and stability in the West African sub-region and beyond

He called for sustained efforts in peacekeeping, counterterrorism, and cross-border security initiatives, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to intelligence sharing, training exchanges, and joint operations with global partners.

One of the central messages of the President’s address was the need for ethical leadership, discipline, and accountability within the armed forces.

He emphasized that a strong military is not defined solely by its weaponry or size but by the professionalism, morale, and integrity of its personnel.

“As members of the Armed Forces Council, we must ensure that the highest standards of ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability are maintained within the ranks of our armed forces. Corruption, misconduct, and abuse of power must have no place in our military.”

He urged the council to lead by example, fostering an environment of trust, fairness, and integrity within the armed forces.

Honouring the Service and Sacrifice of Military Personnel:

Addressing the officers, men, and women of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Mahama expressed deep gratitude for their service, acknowledging the immense sacrifices they make to safeguard the nation’s peace and security.

He recognized the hardships many personnel endure, including extended periods away from their families, exposure to life-threatening situations, and responding to national emergencies.

“Your unwavering dedication ensures that Ghana remains peaceful, stable, and secure. Many of you have paid the ultimate sacrifice for your nation, and for this, we are eternally grateful.”

He assured military personnel that the government remains committed to improving their conditions of service, including better access to healthcare, housing, and professional development opportunities.

As Ghana moves forward, President Mahama called for unity to ensure the continued excellence of the armed forces.

He emphasized that the military should not only serve as a defence institution but also as a symbol of national pride, progress, and unity.

“To the outgoing members of the Armed Forces Council and the service commanders who have served diligently, Ghana is deeply grateful for your efforts. Your dedication has contributed immensely to the strength of our military.”

The President congratulated the newly sworn-in council members, expressing confidence in their ability to lead with honour and dedication.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new Armed Forces Council marks a crucial step in Ghana’s efforts to strengthen its military institution.

Under the leadership of Vice President Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the council is expected to provide the necessary strategic direction to ensure the Ghana Armed Forces remain a modern, disciplined, and highly respected entity both locally and internationally.
