Some Members of Parliament have advocated strongly for Africa to be represented at the UN Security Council.
The call was made on the floor of Parliament when the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Ayokor Botchwey made a statement to commemorate the 72nd United Nation Day.
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Okudzeto Ablakwa who is the Ranking Member of Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament said after 72 years, Africa cannot continue to see the global body take decisions that border on security, especially when most of the security concerns are in the continent.
“How can you be taking decisions for us at the security council level, without the views, inputs and perspectives of Africans…This cannot continue,” he insisted.
Mr. Ablakwa noted that as the United Nations leads efforts to reform the world and to build fair and just society, it must begin from within.
The Ranking member stated that it is time for Africa to be invited to the table, Africa must be represented at the United Nation Security Council, and we want to make that point very forcefully.
Okudzeto Ablakwa’s position was supported by the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Annor Dompreh, who said Africa needs a veto power at the UN Security Council.
Both MPs agreed in their respective submission with the President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo who recently at the General Assembly meeting in New York told the world that the United Nations itself needs reformation. Read more
Nonetheless, the house commended the United Nation for its effort to prevent a possible third world war.
Mr. Ablakwa who is a former Deputy Minister of Education assured the Secretary General of the United Nations that he can count on Africans support if he will genuinely pursue this agenda of reforming the Security Council so that Africa will be at the table.
