The Executive Director of the African Centre for Security and Counter-Terrorism says the composition of the highly powered task-force to tackle the menace of vigilantism is too partisan to fight a national cause.
It appears the task-force would only be focusing on issues bothering on vigilante groups aligned with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Emmanuel Kotin observed.
It has been tasked with the mandate to ensure that all political vigilantism in the northern part of the country is dealt with.
In an interview with Kwakye Afreh Nuamah on 3FM Friday, Emmanuel Kotin cautioned that if care is not taken, vigilantism within the NPP would be solved whilst that of others would not be dealt with.
“It is a national issue that demands a non-partisan approach,” he emphasised.
For instance, known pro-opposition vigilante group, the Azorka Boys of the NDC are still on the ground, but are afraid to act because their party is not in power, Mr. Kotin underscored.
He is therefore calling for the committee to be reconstituted “if we really want to tackle the issue from a national point of view”.
Better still, he suggested that the issue should be addressed at the party level.
For instance, he opined, the NPP like other parties can activate party structures, which would be more effective especially in dealing with those at the grassroots through education.
The security analyst nonetheless insisted that vigilantism, that has roundly been criticised should be “totally outlawed and it should start from the political parties”.
The task-force to investigate and deal with issues of political vigilantism had spent three days in the Northern Region holding discussions with major stakeholders involving NPP regional executives.
The task-force is led by a Deputy Minister for Energy, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam Anta.
Other members include the Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Hassan Tampuli, a Presidential Staffer, Clara Napaga Tia Sulemana, and Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Dr. Clifford Braimah.
The task-force among other major achievements, has succeeded in resolving the intra political stalemate between the embattled Karaga District Chief Executive, Alhassan Yabdow, the NPP constituency leadership, and scores of the youth there. Read more
