The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday launched two new products of the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA), touting their ability to transform Ghana’s economy.
The Vice President emphasized that the new products, Smart Driver’s Licence and the Smart Vehicle Registration Card, will contribute significantly to the country’s modernization drive.
He was certain the issue of fake licences, fake roadworthy stickers, fake number plates and fake documents that lead to security threats and massive revenue shortfalls would be eliminated from the system.
“It is estimated that road transportation carries approximately ninety-eight per cent (98%) of the passengers and freight traffic in the country, with available information indicating that the national targets for growth and poverty reduction rely heavily on the effectiveness of this sector,” he explained.
With this new process, it should take anybody a maximum of two to three weeks to obtain a licence in Ghana.
However, and once you passed your test, if you opt for the premium service, you should get your licence in one day, the Vice President announced.
Dr. Bawumia was excited about the “remarkable progress” at the DVLA, which virtually paved way for him to poke back at Jon Benjamin, former British High Commissioner to Ghana, who recently mocked the cumbersome process in getting driver’s licence in Ghana.
“It was a subtle jab at us, and I did take it personal. And so today I would like to say to Jon Benjamin that change has come, and I would like to invite him to come and test our services at DVLA again,” he remarked.
Speaking under the theme “Transforming Driver ad Vehicle Licencing through People, Processes and Technology”, Dr. Bawumia charged the DVLA to immediately move to providing secure payment options with several variations to its clients.
He recounted how the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, and his government are working assiduously to see the country’s economy transformed under his leadership.
“After 60 years of independence, it can no longer be business as usual. We all must roll our sleeves and work to transform our country,” he insisted.
