NDC Youth Who Resisted Two Armed Soldiers At Obuasi Meets Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth who became an instant hero after he stood the might of two armed soldiers, has met with President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.

Yahya Al HaQ met Mr Mahama at his Cantonments office in Accra together with the Ashanti Regional Communication Officer of the NDC Abass Nurudeen days ago.

Mr Mahama after meeting the Obuasi East constituency Communication Officer commended him for his exceptional display of bravery in the face of the armed soldiers who could have harmed him their rifles.

Abass who made this public with photographics tweeted on X “Yesteray, I pad a courtesy call on Prez. Mahama at his Office in Cantonments with my Cco for Obuasi East, Comrade Yahya Al HaQ. Prez. Mahama commended him for his exceptional display of bravery in standing up to marauding military men who invaded polling station in Obuasi”.

Another bigwig of the party Ambassador Alhaji Sinare, has also been seen in a video with Yahya praising him for his role in making sure the NDC returned to power. He had invited the man of the moment to his house and personally rewarded him and promised the party will dditionally reward him accordingly in due course.

“This guy killed himself every dick and harry in the NDC is proud of him. This is the guy who fought those two soldiers dressed in military uniform, had their rifle, AK47 and all that. This was the guy who held the two soldiers with AK47 everybody saw that video. He risked his life because he was determined to makre sure that the NDC comes back to power, JM is restored as the president of Ghana. We thank Allah, we thank you. When I saw the video, I shed tears because you were so brave you were so determined, you didn’t give those fake soldiers chance to rig that particular election for Obuasi East and by the grace of God, Isha Allah very soon we shall reward you. Very soon, whatever we have to do for you we will do it for you because at the grassroots you have done so much for the NDC, he said in the video.

The incident occurred at a polling station at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region on Election Day, December 7. The NDC ended up winnig the Obuasi East constituency seat for the first time since it creation.

Yahya’s encounter with the military was played live on television with Ghanaians expressing fear for his life after the uniform men invaded the polling station unvited.

Taking a cue from what happened at Techiman South and other constitieucies in 2020 where 8 people were shot and killed by the military, it had been agreed that security for the election was going to be provided by only the police.

The Armed Forces had issued a statement signed by the head of the Public Affairs department Colonel Eric Aggrey-Quarshie to confirm this few days to the election and encouraged the general public to report anyone that show up at the polling station claiming to be a soldier to the nearest police station.

Despite this notice, the two soldiers stormed the said polling station fully armed for what residents could not tell immediately. They were therefore confronted by Yahya and one other but the latter chickened out leaving the fight for the NDC communicator with his bare hands.

In the struggle, he was able to overpower the soldiers and ensured they did not have their way. After that encounter, the soldiers who possessed AK47 were seen giving warning shots at one side of the polling station but no one was hurt.

The harrowing spectable had been commended by many Ghanaians who said Yahya needed to be recognized and rewarded for resisting oppressors.
