The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has responded to recent concerns raised by pressure group OccupyGhana on the management of Covid-19 in Ghana. OccupyGhana in a statement on Tuesday expressed suspicion that the Service is under-reporting Ghana’s Covid-19 figures on cases, recoveries and deaths. It said government appears to have decided to live with the virus but not made that clear to the large populace. “If the government has decided to pursue a policy of ‘living with the virus,’ then the healthcare system and the population should be prepped for this,” it said in its conclusion. “Let’s just remember that Sweden…

Introduction The rains are here and the changes in weather is gradually becoming evident. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China, almost all regions of the world are battling with the scourge which is yet to diminish. Interestingly, most countries have reported cases across gradually-changing weather conditions amongst other public health determinants. Initially, the outbreak began in winter across several continents including Asia, Europe, America, and a few countries in Africa. With time, spring set in, and gradually summer is approaching, yet a good number of COVID-19 cases have been reported and…
George Floyd tested positive for COVID-19. What has that got to do with his death? Absolutely nothing! If your brother had asthma, and someone intentionally introduced smoke into his room, and he died, you would be very upset if the system said “well he had asthma, so nothing to see here”. Look up ‘Proximate Cause of Death’ and you’d find that even if Mr Floyd was carrying the plague, someone’s knee pressing on his neck for almost 9 minutes cancels out all other probable causes. Lots to discuss. This is an opinion piece. Do NOT shoot the messenger. It is…
A cheap and widely available drug called dexamethasone can help save the lives of patients who are seriously ill with coronavirus. UK experts say the low-dose steroid treatment is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus. It cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators. For those on oxygen, it cut deaths by a fifth. The drug is part of the world’s biggest trial testing existing treatments to see if they also work for coronavirus. Researchers estimate that if the drug had been used to treat patients in the UK from the start…

Four remand prisoners have tested positive to Covid-19 at the Asamankese Police Cell in the Eastern Region, the West Akyem Municipal Health Director has confirmed. Marricke Kofi Gane, an independent presidential aspirant, has strongly kicked against the resolution by Electoral Commission, Ghana(EC) to compile a new voter register for the December7 polls. He has maintained that it is not necessary for the EC to compile a new voter register before conducting a successful election since the existing register was used in 2012 and used for a “successful” district assembly election recently. The chartered accountant and international development practitioner, speaking to Nana Yaw Opare on Yensempa on Onua FM on Monday, June 15, described EC’s resolution as needless and incoherent. He underscored the EC could go…
The National Identification Authority (NIA) will resume the registration of eligible applicants in the Eastern Region from Thursday, June 18. The exercise in the Region was suspended under controversial circumstances which even went to the High Court. The Authority had continued registering applicants in the Eastern Region despite President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s ban on social gathering on March 15. Many civil society organisations including the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) called for an end to the exercise as Covid-19 had been recorded in the country and showed signs of spreading especially in crowded locations. Though the High Court dismissed the…
