A former Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has urged Parliament to amend the Legislative Instrument (LI) that bans the use of motorcycles as taxis (Okada). Section 128 (1), (2) and (3) of Road Traffic Regulations 2012, LI 2180, prohibits the use of a motorcycle or tricycle or what has been popularly known as ‘Okada’ for commercial purposes. The Minority in Parliament is asking government to terminate the concession agreement with Power Distribution Services Ghana Limited (PDS) with immediate effect. The Minority also wants the Office of Special Prosecutor to investigate the state’s inability to detect the fraud involved in the demand guarantees submitted by PDS before it took over the operations and management of the Electricity Company of Ghana. Attorney-General (A-G) Gloria Akuffo has declined a request by businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome, to renegotiate the arrears of the 51.2 million-cedi judgement debt illegally paid him by the government 10 years ago. For the last four years, the government has been chasing the businessman for a refund of the 51.2 million cedis after the Supreme Court in 2014 declared the payment as illegal. Though Woyome initially reached an agreement with government to refund the amount in instalments, he breached the payment plan after paying only 4 million cedis, causing the government to go after his properties to finance the debt.…

A 19-year-old female mobile money vendor in Accra who was arrested for faking her kidnap, has been handed a 12-month jail term by the Adjabeng District Court. Though Beatrice Naa Lamley Kitson Mills pleaded not guilty to the offence of publication of false news, she was at the end of the trial found guilty, and according sentenced to serve as a deterrent to persons in engaged in making false kidnapping claims.
