South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa may have hoped that joining the morning commute would mark him out as a man of the people ahead of elections in May. That plan has either backfired or worked, depending on how you view it. A 27-year-old graphic designer who attacked a 102-year-old woman in his bid to rob her has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court. Joel Mawuli Mensa, who was charged with causing harm pleaded guilty. Mensa told the court that he thought that the old woman had money tied around her waist band. The death toll in Mozambique from Cyclone Idai could reach 1,000, President Filipe Nyusi has said. It made landfall close to the port city of Beira on Thursday with winds of up to 177 km/h (106 mph), but aid teams only reached the city on Sunday. The official death toll stands at 84 following flooding and high winds, which have destroyed homes and ripped roofs from concrete buildings.
