A Psychiatrist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Dr. John-Paul Omuojine, has raised alarm about an emerging trend in drug abuse whereby the youth lace marijuana with opium, known locally as ‘tie’, for use. Opium is a reddish-brown, heavily scented addictive drug prepared from the juice of the opium plant and used illicitly as a narcotic. The US Federal Aviation Administration has told airlines it believes Boeing’s 737 Max 8 model to be airworthy, after two fatal crashes inside six months. An Ethiopian Airlines plane en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi crashed six minutes after take-off on Sunday, killing all 157 people on board. The incident followed Lion Air 737 Max 8 crash in October that killed 189. Some in the aviation community have called for the aircraft to be grounded pending a full investigation. One of Africa’s largest financial services providers, Absa Group Limited, reported an increase in revenue and earnings for 2018. This gain, according to the group, came in a year of almost unprecedented corporate activity as the group re-positioned itself for delivery against a new growth strategy as an independent African bank. Normalised headline earnings of the group increased 3% to R16.1 billion compared with 2017 and revenue increased 4% to R75.7 billion. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) say President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s response to their call for stakeholder participation in finding a solution to political vigilantism is unfortunate.
