Government has announced plans to build a new oil refinery at Takoradi within the next three to four years. The new facility is estimated to cost the Government of Ghana some 4 billion dollars, Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko disclosed this at a forum organized by the National Petroleum Authority. Mr. Agyarko said the new refinery will increase the supply of refined products in the country. “The idea therefore is to create a hub in the Western Region where we have the refining, the storage, the transportation and trading all happening within an enclave. The first phase of the Kumasi Kejetia redevelopment project will soon be completed and handed over to Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. Currently, it is left with the construction of the road network, in and around the project. The consultant for the project, Mr Emmanuel Danso announced to journalists when the Kumasi Traditional Council led by Bantama hene, Baffour Owusu Amankwaatia VI toured the project site on Tuesday, 30th January 2018. Several properties have been razed down in a fire outbreak at the Dome Market in the Ga East District of the Greater Accra region Wednesday evening. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service had a tough time battling to bring the raging fire under control. It is not clear what caused the fire. Properties running into thousands of cedis were lost to the fire which swept through the market around 8pm. The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is to convert LPG stations considered to be high risk into cylinder distribution centers. The Authority is therefore going to categorize LPG stations into high and low risk when it rolls out the second phase of the LPG refilling plant safety risk assessment in the wake of the incessant gas explosions that claimed many lives. Currently, a total of 657 stations have been inspected using the criteria developed for the first phase of which 59 remain closed down due to non-compliance, CEO of NPA Alhassan Tampuli remarked. The five suspects arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape at Bantama in the Ashanti Region last year have been sent back to juvenile cells, pending investigations. On January 17, 2018, the Asokwa Juvenile Court struck out the case involving the five suspects based on information made available by the state attorney.
