Members of the Ahanta West District Assembly in the Western Region have questioned why their District Chief Executive, Henrietta Mary Eyison, spent GHC22,200 rent accommodation whereas the Assembly has an official bungalow. Her action, the assembly members say, is in breach of a decision taken at their General Assembly meeting to renovate the official bungalow for the DCE, which they say is in good shape and was occupied by Ms Eyison’s predecessors. “The building is in good condition, it just needs a few touches. It was the same structure that our former DCEs used; Ekow Jones and Kwesi Biney, they…

By societal expectation, starting a family immediately after marriage is the norm, but for actress/TV presenter, Naa Ashorkor, young wives need to be given the chance to plan their way into motherhood. Naa Ashorkor, who recently gave birth to a baby boy, said the pressure for young couples to have children as soon as the rings are on their fingers does not help in planning for the future. She told the Graphic Showbiz in an interview that already she has to answer questions about when she is having a second baby. “It’s been less than three months since I gave…
Civil servants in Ghana are more corrupt than politicians who are frequently accused of the canker, Dr Tony Aidoo has claimed. He argued that civil servants, especially those working at the various ministries, departments and agencies, are at the forefront of corruption in the country. “Honestly, civil servants are more corrupt than the politician, oh yes!” he said in an interview with Winston Amoah, host of 3FM’s morning show, Sunrise. He observed that corruption, which has been one of the biggest challenges to Ghana’s development, “is in the gene of the Ghanaian. It’s ingrained!” Dr. Aidoo said though fingers are…
The Akufo-Addo government’s free education for Senior High School students is the most important social intervention programme ever implemented in Ghana since independence, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has declared. In its estimation, the audacious programme, which was rolled out last Tuesday by the President, is the best way of distributing the country’s resources equitably to the people. “We believe it is the most equitable way to distribute the country’s resources to all Ghanaians regardless of their socio-economic background,” the TUC said on Monday in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Dr. Yaw Baah. TUC said it has been…

Three hundred of those on trial received sentences ranging from five to 15 years. Fifty-four people were acquitted, including Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa. Mr Halawa was aged 17 when he was arrested and says he was tortured during his more than four-year imprisonment. A US citizen, Ahmed Etiwy, was among those sentenced to five…
Swiss prosecutors are investigating why tens of thousands of euros were flushed down toilets in Geneva. The €500 (£440; $600) notes were cut up and found in the toilets of a branch of the bank UBS and in three nearby restaurants. Thousands of francs have reportedly been spent on plumbing repairs to unclog the surrounding pipes. The high-value euro notes are due to be withdrawn in 2018 over fears they facilitate illegal activities. They will remain legal tender, but the European Central Bank will stop producing them following a European Commission inquiry into their use. Destroying notes is not an…
The corruption allegation made against President Akufo-Addo’s deputy Chiefs of Staff by controversial musician A-Plus, has been found to be baseless and without credibility, the Ghana Police Service has concluded. According to the Police, the action of the two deputy Chiefs of Staff, Francis Asenso-Boakye and Samuel Abu Jinapor, which the musician considered to be corrupt, was rather transparent and devoid of corruption. On August 27 this year, the musician known in real life as Kwame Asare Obeng claimed in a Facebook post that the two deputy Chiefs of Staff were corrupt and thieves. He was subsequently invited by the…
Veteran politician and former Ghana’s Ambassador to the Netherlands Dr Tony Aidoo has asked former President Jerry John Rawlings to provide factual evidence to support the allegations of corruption leveled against some officials under the Mahama administration. Mr Rawlings is reported to have said that former officials under the Mahama administration were corrupt and amassed wealth. According to him, “…the kind of greed, selfishness…” was what caused the defeat of the National Democratic Congress in the 2016 general election. But Mr Aidoo in response to the allegations said anything short of evidence would mean the former president was playing mischief.…
