Minister of Interior Ambrose Dery has admonished Ghanaians not to take the peace enjoyed for granted given the zero record of extremist attacks in the country.
He expressed gratitude to God for the peace so far.
Mr Dery expressed these remarks on Thursday at the launch of a toolkit mobile app to tackle extremist activities in sub-Saharan Africa.
Spearheaded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the toolkit mobile app is to add to the preventive approach to fighting terrorism and extremism in the sub-region.
The Nandom Member of Parliament underscored the importance of the fight against terrorism, saying over 44, 000 deaths and 11,000 injuries have been recorded so far as a result of the menace.
The global economic costs, he added, stands at $90 billion as at the end of 2015.
“Ghana as a country has been blessed as it has not experienced any extremist attacks so far,” he stated but cautioned: “Well, we ask and we pray God to bless our homeland Ghana in our national anthem all the time. We are grateful to the almighty God but do not take the status quo for granted.”
The Minister of Interior expressed the country’s commitment to fighting the menace on the continent.
“Ghana will continue to work with all stakeholders in its effort to fight terrorism and extremism.”
He considered the new toolkit mobile app as “an opportunity for Ghana to add another mechanism to its preventive approach”.
“It is my hope that the civil society groups which have proved key partners in Ghana’s development will collaborate with the appropriate stakeholders to change the narrative around violent extremists.”
