The Director in charge of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa, has disclosed that investigative bodies are still in pursuit of the suspected ringleader behind a sophisticated counterfeiting operation uncovered in Sapeiman, located in the Greater Accra Region, in February this year.
Speaking to journalists, Mr Jakpa, revealed that the evidence collected during the high-stakes operation has remained untouched, as authorities continue to build a case and track down the mastermind behind the criminal enterprise.
The operation, which stunned many, centred around an uncompleted house in Sapeiman — an unassuming structure that turned out to be the nerve centre of a multi-million cedi counterfeit ring. Prior to the bust, the building was reportedly inhabited by an elderly man locally referred to as “the Battery Doctor”, who maintained a low profile in the neighbourhood.
Authorities believe the premises served as a front for illicit printing and distribution of fake currencies and documents. The National Security-led team stormed the property following weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering.
According to Mr Jakpa, while some individuals were apprehended during the raid, the key figure believed to be orchestrating the operations remains at large.
“The investigation is ongoing, and we are following credible leads to apprehend the person behind this complex network. We have not tampered with the evidence found at the scene to preserve its integrity for court proceedings,” he stated.
Residents of Sapeiman have expressed shock over the discovery, noting that the elderly man who resided there gave no indication of criminal activity. National Security, however, assures the public that every effort is being made to dismantle the network and bring all culprits to justice.
