Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwa, says he is considering hauling his colleague, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, before the privileges committee of parliament for publicising a report that claims about 100 Ghanaians have joined the terror group ISIS.
Mr Okudzeto who is the minority spokesperson on Foreign Affairs is said to have organised a press conference to publicise a Libyan government report that claimed 50 to 100 Ghanaian migrants have joined ISIS.
The report, which ranked Ghana in the second highest category, suggested those Ghanaians are in the frontline fighting for ISIS in Libya.
Members of the Minority, especially Mr Okudzeto has been criticised for making public the document which government says, is being investigated to establish its authenticity.
While Mr Okudzeto has told his crticis to rather commend the Minority for brining the issue to the fore, Mr Amankwa who is the first vice chairman of the Defence Committee says the release of the document was intended to create fear and panic among Ghanaians.
He questioned the motive behind the action of the Minority, and said “some of us are considering to drag him to privileges committee so that henceforth, such matters will be well handled as far as the legislature is concerned”.
He did not understand why the Minority hurriedly put out the information, which he said the government has already started investigating, stating the action by the minority said was premature.
“Okudzeto erred … Issues they raised were not well substantiated and the issue bothers on security, security matters are unlike Makola or Kejetia issues you could handle it anyhow,” he told journalists Friday.
Mr. Amankwa said though Mr Okudzeto could talk about the issue, the manner and the way he did it was questionable.
He said he doubts the accuracy of the claims in the Libyan government report, adding “We need to double-check such facts before we put [it] out there to create unnecessary tension and also just to create fear and panic in the system”
