The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana, has urged Ghanaian media to dedicate 80% of their airplay to local music throughout the month of March.
Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Nominees Announcement, held at the Accra International Conference Centre on March 15, 2025, Abeiku Santana emphasised the need to promote Ghanaian music and culture.
“We encourage our media houses to dedicate a significant portion of their time to play Ghanaian music this March, aiming for at least 80%, if not 100%,” he stated.
Abeiku Santana also emphasised the importance of preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage through music, especially highlife, which is deeply rooted in the country’s history.
“The Ghana Tourism Authority, as a government agency is responsible for creating awareness and sensitisation of Ghanaian culture and heritage. Music is an integral part of our culture, particularly highlife, and it’s important that we cherish this heritage and pass it down to future generations,” he added.
On the trend of foreign genres overshadowing highlife music in recent years, Abeiku Santana believes that media platforms will play a key role in reviving interest in highlife and other indigenous sounds.
