There have been 498 new cases of coronavirus recorded within the last 24 hours. The latest update by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on its website puts the total figure at 10,856 from the previous 10,358 on Thursday. The Service was quiet on the source of the latest cases but the distribution is spread among the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Western regions with the Upper East Region recording over 80 cases. The Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, has indicated that the bi-weekly press briefings that is organized by the Ministry of Information on the coronavirus situation in Ghana have not stopped. The chiefs of Gomoa Ojobi in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region has banned a 57-year-old pastor of the African Faith Tabernacle Church from churching in the community after having an affair with his aunt who already has 11 children. The chiefs also fined Pastor Peter Inkoom three sheep, three bottles of Schnapps and an amount of GH¢300 to be used to perform the necessary rituals to cleanse the community. Some two lecturers of the Koforidua Technical University have received letters of apology from one Bismark Agbelengor for “wrongly” including their names in a petition sent to the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) by about 101 lecturers, calling on Jean Mensa to reconsider the decision to compile a new register for the December 7 elections. South Africa’s Police Minister Bheki Cele has attributed rising crime in the country to the partial lifting of alcohol sales. Mr Cele said he hoped the National Coronavirus Command Council would discuss the matter and “do the right thing”. Alcohol-fuelled violence is a huge problem in South Africa. The country lifted restrictions on the sale of alcohol on 1 June after coronavirus restrictions were eased to level three. The UK’s economy shrank by 20.4% in April – the largest monthly contraction on record – as the country spent its first full month in lockdown. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the “historic” fall affected virtually all areas of activity. The contraction is three times greater than the decline seen during the whole of the 2008 to 2009 economic downturn.
