Guyana has conferred on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, its highest national award (Order of Excellence of Guyana) at a state luncheon held in Georgetown in his honour on Tuesday. Established in 1970 under the Constitution of the Orders of Guyana, the Order of Excellence of Guyana is limited to only 25 living citizens of Guyana. Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says government concedes there are some challenges with its one-village, one-dam programme, but committed to rectifying them. Media reports surfaced recently suggesting work on some of the dams being constructed in parts of northern Ghana was substandard, triggering criticism against the government. Police have fired rubber bullets and tear gas at protesters in Hong Kong where anger at a new extradition bill has spilled over into violence. Protesters have blocked key roads around government buildings and threw bricks and projectiles at police. The government is still pushing for the bill which would allow extradition to mainland China and it is expected to pass its final vote on 20 June. A 14-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate is reported missing in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, missing four papers. Valerian Osei-Nyarko who visited his father in Koforidua, was put in a bus last Saturday to return to Kumasi where he has been staying with the aunt, to begin the BECE but was said to have got down from bus at the Koforidua station. The Australian High Commission in Ghana has cautioned its citizens to be extra vigilant when using public transport and other transport services in the country. The Australian government has made available some 75,000 Australian Dollars ($52,000) for a counter-terrorism course to be organized for security agencies and other stakeholders in Ghana. This intervention has become necessary following several cases of terror attacks in some West African countries including Mali and Burkina Faso and security alerts by some agencies that Ghana could be the next destination for some of these attackers. Amazon’s warehouses will always need human staff, the firm’s chief robotics technologist has told the BBC. The company said it had deployed more than 200,000 warehouse robots working in around 50 of its locations.
