A company belonging to Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe has been ordered to vacate prime urban land belonging to a private school, or face legal action. The Mugabe-owned Gushungo Holdings is alleged to have taken over a 23-hectare property in an upmarket suburb in Harare. The Reformed Church says the land belongs to its Eaglesvale Group of Schools. The schools’ lawyer Rodney Makausi told the BBC that in 2016 the government had sought compulsory seizure of the land. Residents in the South African city of Cape Town have been warned to “save water as if your life depends on it” to avoid the supply being shut off. A severe drought has forced the city’s municipality to limit consumption to 50 litres (11 gallons) per person per day. Dry season farmers in the Upper East Region have now adopted the drip and sprinkle irrigation system for an effective all year round farming. They have therefore shifted away from the water pump type of irrigation which needed enough manpower and huge investment. The new irrigation technologies were designed by the Savanna Agriculture Research Institute (SARI) under the Center for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to make agriculture attractive.
