Partial results from Liberia’s presidential election show former football star George Weah has taken an early lead. Figures from the National Elections Commission (NEC) put Mr Weah ahead in 11 out of 15 counties, although most votes have yet to be counted. His main rival, incumbent Vice-President Joseph Boakai, leads in one county and is second in most others. A candidate needs more than 50% of the votes for outright victory. Ghana’s High Commissioner to India, Mike Oquaye Jnr, has appealed to India to support Ghana in the ongoing FIFA U17 World Cup after India exited from the tournament. The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed that construction of facilities intended for use as gas or petroleum retail stations must be stopped with immediate effect. He also instructed that high risk LPG stations should be closed down immediately, in accordance with relevant law “without regard to any political or special interests”. The directive with regards to the LPG stations is to be carried out after a risk assessment of the current infrastructure has been carried out; a taskforce is to be deployed within 30 days to undertake the exercise. The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has intercepted some of the consignment of the unwholesome ‘So Nice’ mackerel in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital. At least 500 cartons of the “So Nice” brand of the mackerel were found on Thursday afternoon following a frantic search by the FDA. The mackerel had left Accra before the police from the Mile 7 District intercepted the ‘Asahi’ mackerel at Ofankor last week Tuesday. The Ashanti regional police command has arrested about 245 suspected criminals and sex workers in a swoop on Thursday. The move, according to the police, was part of proactive way of policing in order to rid the region off criminal elements and make the region a safer place for law abiding citizens.
