A radio station in Cameroon’s English-speaking city of Bamenda has been closed down. A police squad visited the offices of Radio Hot Cocoa and ordered that it stop operations. Officials accuse the station of using interactive programmes to stir up tension among Anglophone listeners, who often complain that they face discrimination. In the last few months there have been protests in Bamenda against the use of French in courts and schools in two of the country’s two English-speaking regions. In-laws do not have the right to dissolve ordinance marriages, Mr. Francis Bennett Adams, Registrar of Marriage at the Sekondi- Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has said. He thus advised in-laws to stop interfering in the marriages of their children, saying, “yours is to pray for the couples to see the marriage work rather than siding with one party in the case of complaints and problems and then fight for divorce”. Outspoken Ghanaian professor, Stephen Kwaku Asare, is warning of serious threats, including legal battles, to the implementation of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s plan to create additional regions. He argues the creation of new regions will be “very difficult, nearly impossible” due to the absence of explicit provisions in the 1992 constitution, which state who qualifies to particpate in a referendum for such exercise. Only persons accredited would be allowed into the room where ministers-designate would be vetted, Parliament’s Appointments Committee has served notice.  The committee is preparing to issue accreditation to few people that would be invited by persons nominated by President Akufo-Addo to serve in the various ministries, in order for them to observe the vetting process.
