Schalke 04 and Black Stars defender Abdul Baba Rahman may not play again this season after his club confirmed that his injury will sideline him for “several months”.
The former Asante Kotoko player sustained an injury in Ghana’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations opener against Uganda.
Initial MRI scans in Gabon revealed that the defender could not play any more role in the Nations Cup.
He was therefore accompanied by a member of the Black Stars technical team to Germany.
On Tuesday, January 24, Schalke 04 reported on its website that Baba Rahman successfully underwent surgery, which revealed that the injury is worse than thought.
It said the operation “showed a complex cruciate ligament rupture with accompanying internal and external meniscus”.
The operation was carried out in Augsburg, where Rahman launched his European career.
It is unclear when the left-back will return to action but his club says he will be out for several months.
