Liberia’s outgoing president has been expelled from her own party, for allegedly failing to support its candidate to succeed her. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is accused of encouraging people to vote against her vice-president, Joseph Boakai. Former footballer George Weah won the presidential elections in December, defeating Mr Boakai. Ms Sirleaf, who is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and Africa’s first elected woman president, could not stand again. The Sekondi/ Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has allocated GH₵ 74,000 to assist the metro education directorate to conduct two different mock examinations for 2017/ 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in public schools within the metropolis. The Tunisian government has announced a wave of social reforms, following days of demonstrations by anti-austerity protesters. Protests broke out ahead of Sunday’s seventh anniversary of the ousting of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. Emergency government meetings were held in response to protests, which have seen more than 800 people arrested. Officials said plans had been submitted to parliament to reform medical care, housing and increase aid to the poor. The Brong Ahafo Regional Youth Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe popularly known as Abronye DC has been attacked and subjected to severe beatings by some NPP activists. Two persons have been picked up in a police cum military operation in Bimbilla in connection with Thursday’s deadly shootings. The suspects are Abdulai Kasim, 45, and Wumbei Mohammed, 40.
