Each National Service person will now pay a mandatory monthly GHC15 fee as insurance cover in a new policy by the National Service Scheme. Under the insurance policy, personnel would enjoy free healthcare during their 12-month national service and in the event of death while in service, GHC15,000 would be paid to the next of kin. Amnesty International has condemned the decision of a military court in Cameroon to sentence an opposition leader to 25 years in prison. Aboubakar Siddiki was arrested in 2014, accused of plotting to destabilise President Paul Biya’s government. He is “the latest victim of the Cameroonian authorities’ strangling of opposition voices”, the UK-based human rights group said.
