One of the six district hospitals started by the John Mahama government to eliminate disparities in healthcare delivery in the country has been abandoned at the Garu Tempane in the Upper East Region. In August 2013 the then Health Minister Sherry Ayitey cut sod for construction work to begin on the hospitals under the 175 million-dollar turnkey project at Dodowa, Kumawu, Sekondi, Abetifi, Garu Tempane and Fomena. The Fomena T.I. Ahmediyya Senior High School in the Ashanti Region has been closed down, albeit temporary, following a fire outbreak that destroyed the girl’s dormitory. This is the second time within two months that the school has been affected by fire at a girl’s dormitory. At least four fire incidents have been recorded in the school within a year. This prompted school authorities to sanction an early midterm to enable the students go home for officials to assess the damage and consider the next available option. Pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) has urged the Chief Justice of Ghana, Sophia Akuffo, to expedite action on the petition seeking to impeach chairperson for Electoral Commission, Mrs. Charlotte Osei. Some anonymous staff of the Commission petitioned President Akufo-Addo to commence impeachment proceedings against Mrs Osei who they accused of corruption and financial impropriety among other breaches of the country’s laws. President Nana Akufo-Addo has inaugurated a nine-member Commission of Inquiry to see to the creation of at least five new regions. The Commission would be chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge, Justice S. A. Brobbey. The country currently has 10 regions with the Greater Accra being the capital. The Commission of Inquiry are expected to tour the country especially the Volta, Brong Ahafo, Northern and Western regions to gather the necessary information for the landmark exercise. Students in agriculture and related sciences (IAAS) are urging government to establish State farms under its flagship Planting for Food and Jobs programme that seeks to whip up interest in agriculture and boost food production in the country. Spain is to start suspending Catalonian autonomy on Saturday, after its leader threatened to declare independence. The PM’s office said ministers would meet to activate Article 155 of the constitution, allowing it to take over running of the region. Catalonia’s leader said earlier the region’s parliament would vote on independence, backed in a disputed referendum on 1 October, if Spain “continues repression”. A Canadian man has filed a lawsuit against Sunwing Airlines for promising a champagne service and instead serving sparkling wine. Daniel Macduff booked a holiday to Cuba through Sunwing that advertised a complimentary on-board champagne toast. Mr Macduff, from Quebec, said he received a cheaper bubbly instead – and only on the outgoing flight. The airline said it believes the lawsuit “to be frivolous and without merit”.
