Traditional leaders have joined forces with parents in the Sissala East and West areas in the Upper West Region to devise some by-laws to protect young girls against teenage pregnancy and child marriage. Depending on the degree of the offence, the man would be forced to pay as high as GHc 1,000 in addition to items such as cow and food. President Nana Akufo-Addo has discredited a widely circulated tweet in a screenshot purported to have been authored by him, inviting boxer Samir Bastie to a feast at the seat of government. Mr David Asante-Apeatu, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has announced that every police officer would soon have GH¢ 50,000 insurance cover. He said the amount would be used in case of death in the line of duty and three children would be catered for from nursery to tertiary. He added that even if one should die accidentally or a natural death, the family would be entitled to GH¢ 25,000, and if an officer should suffer permanent disability, he or she would be entitled to GH¢ 25,000. Miss Abigail Baciara Gbentie, winner of 2014 TV3’s Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant has encouraged basic school girls to stand firm against child marriage and avoid becoming victims of the social canker. The Central regional branch of the Chefs Association of Ghana is not enthused by the current system where the Gender Ministry employs caterers for the School Feeding program without checking their qualification or background. “We are calling on the Ministry of Gender to take a second look at all School Feeding Program caterers whether they deserve to cook for school children, because the type of meals they cook for the children are not unhealthy.” Mr Paul K .A. The Electoral Commission is to embark on field trips next week to assess the feasibility of government’s proposal to create new district assemblies in all the 10 regions. Section 1 (a) of the Local Government Act 2016, Act 936 places the responsibility on the Commission to review and make appropriate recommendations on the proposal. “A team each has been constituted for the ten regions to undertake a field study and submit reports accordingly,” a memo to EC’s regional directors stated. The 2016 presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom has blamed the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission for his poor performance in the election after managing 106,092 votes representing 0.99% of the total votes cast.
