The Management of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has decided not to increase the academic facility user fees for the 2017/2018 academic year undergraduate and diploma fresh students. The Ministry of the Interior has reviewed the curfew hours imposed on Alavanyo and Nkonya Townships from 1800 hours to 0600 hours effective Sunday, October 22, 2017. The review of the hours which was upon the advice of the Volta Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument was previously from 2000 hours to 0530 hours. The World Health Organization (WHO) has appointed President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe as a “goodwill ambassador” to help tackle non-communicable diseases. New WHO head Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Zimbabwe for its commitment to public health. But critics say that during Mr Mugabe’s 37-year rule Zimbabwe’s health services have deteriorated, with staff regularly unpaid and medicines in short supply. Sanctions meted out to the over 130 radio stations by the National Communications Authority (NCA) have been mitigated by the Communications Ministry. While others received absolute pardon, some had fines imposed on them cut by 50%, a release from the Communications Ministry announced. The stations were sanctioned by the regulator in September for committing various infractions. Some stations had their licence revoked with others being slapped with a fine as high as GHC61 million. The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has warned that government would not be entertained should it fail to meet JUSAG’s demand by October 31. The group accused government of unilaterally cancelling a rent allowance its members have been enjoying since 2012. The Association had planned to embark on strike on Friday October 20, but after consultations with the Chief Justice, the group announced at a press conference that the “legitimate industrial action” has been deferred. Ameri Energy has defended its $510 million power deal with the government of Ghana, insisting that the company gave the country value for money in that contract. Government of Ghana entered into the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) Agreement dated February 10, 2015. But when the New Patriotic Party government assumed office, it commissioned a committee to investigate the deal.
